Praia de Matosinhos: Getaway for sunny days

In my previous blog I wrote about Praia de Matosinhos, so if you’re looking for the perfect spot to enjoy a sunny day in Porto, look no further. This stunning beach is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, and it’s easy to see why. Whether you’re in the mood for relaxation, fun activities, or just soaking up the sun, this beach has it all.

Praia de Matosinhos is a long stretch of golden sand, perfect for picnics, reading books, drawing, or simply lounging with friends. For the brave ones, the ocean invites you for a refreshing swim, though the water can be a bit chilly! If you’re feeling active, there are volleyball courts where you can join a game or start your own. Along the beach, you’ll find cozy cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite or a drink while enjoying the view. The sunsets are pretty great there!

Surfing enthusiasts will love this place too. Praia de Matosinhos is known for its great waves, making it a hotspot for surf schools. The ones I know of are Fish Surf School and Surfventura. One lesson in Fish Surf School will cost you only around 15€. Well, that’s if you have ELP (get it here, for 20€) or Erasmus Experience (get it here, it’s free) card. Equipment is included.

Getting to Praia de Matosinhos is easy. Just hop on the metro line A towards Senhor de Matosinhos. Get off the Metro on station Matosinhos Sul, from there you only have few minutes of walking. A single ticket in one way, for zone 3, costs €1.8, and the ride takes about 30 minutes from the city center.

Last thing to keep in mind: if it’s windy, it can get chilly, even on sunny days. So, if the breeze picks up, make sure to bring a warm layer or a jacket to stay comfortable.
